The surveyor’s fee is only part of the budget. First identify the survey’s purpose and the boat’s type, age, size and location, then confirm what is included. One Florida provider currently lists $26–$30 per foot with an $850 minimum for a specified pre-purchase scope. That is a local published example, not a national average.

For the pre-purchase example, 30 × $26 is $780, so the $850 minimum applies. At $30/ft, the fee is $900. Use the greater of the calculated base fee and the stated minimum, then add separately confirmed work once. The supplier’s rate page is the source of these figures. It does not establish your yard’s haul-out charge or an all-inclusive purchase inspection.
Ask for the service that matches your decision. A condition-and-value report requested by an insurer may have a different scope from a purchase investigation. Confirm report acceptance with the intended recipient before booking.
BoatUS’s survey guide describes afloat inspection, haul-out and a trial run for most standard pre-purchase surveys. It also recommends a suitably trained mechanic for an engine-focused assessment where appropriate. Do not assume a general hull survey includes an engine teardown or specialist rig inspection.

Mark unconfirmed charges as unknown. A low subtotal with missing work is not a cheaper equivalent quote.
Ask about relevant experience, a sample report and the proposed scope. Confirm the person inspecting the boat and any subcontracted specialist. Discuss access limitations and which systems can be operated during inspection. You want the report to identify limitations as well as findings. A survey is not a guarantee that every concealed defect will be found.

Separate immediate issues, further investigation and future upkeep. Ask the appropriate repairer for scoped estimates rather than treating the surveyor’s observation as a fixed repair price.
